Insectivorous Plants - Carnivorous Plants for Terrariums & Home
Welcome to our fascinating world of insectivorous plants! Discover pitcher plants, flytraps, and other carnivorous plants that catch and eat insects in the most spectacular ways. From classic Venus flytraps to exotic Nepenthes pitchers, we offer everything for both beginners and experienced collectors.
Why choose insectivorous plants?
Carnivorous plants are nature's most fascinating hunters. With various trapping mechanisms, from pitchers that drown their prey to snap traps that close in milliseconds, these plants are both practical (they kill flies and mosquitoes!) and incredibly beautiful to behold. Perfect for terrariums, greenhouses, or sunny windowsills.
Our Carnivorous Plants:
Nepenthes (Pitcher Plants) Tropical pitcher plants with spectacular "pots" filled with digestive fluid. Insects are attracted by nectar, slip in, and drown in the pitcher where they are broken down for nutrients.
- Nepenthes × 'Bloody Mary' - intensely red pitchers, fast-growing hybrid
- Nepenthes × 'Sam' - contrasting patterned pitchers, thrives in cooler temperatures
- Nepenthes sanguinea - blood-red, robust species from Malaysia
- Nepenthes × hookeriana - natural hybrid with green, spotted pitchers
Dionaea muscipula (Venus Flytrap) The classic flytrap from the USA with lobes that snap shut in 0.1 seconds! When an insect touches the trigger hairs inside the trap, it closes and begins to digest its prey. Iconic and easy to grow.
Other carnivorous plants we recommend:
Sarracenia (Trumpet Pitcher Plant) North American funnel-shaped pitcher plants that trap insects in their tall trumpets. Very hardy - can even withstand Swedish winters outdoors!
Drosera (Sundew) Small, glistening plants covered in sticky tentacles that catch flies like flypaper. Perfect for small terrariums.
Pinguicula (Butterwort) Beautiful rosettes with sticky leaves that catch small insects. Often blooms with beautiful purple or white flowers.
Utricularia (Bladderwort) Aquatic or terrestrial carnivorous plants with microscopic suction traps. Beautiful small flowers!
Cephalotus (Australian Pitcher Plant) Rare miniature pitcher plant from Australia with cute small pearl-like pitchers.
Care Instructions for Carnivorous Plants:
Nepenthes (Pitcher Plants):
- Light: Bright, indirect light or light direct morning sun
- Water: Keep consistently moist, use distilled or rainwater
- Humidity: 60-80%, perfect for terrariums
- Temperature: 18-30°C depending on species
- Soil: Sphagnum, perlite, coconut - nutrient-poor substrate
- Food: Does NOT need to be fed - the pitchers catch on their own
- Fertilization: NEVER in the soil, only through the pitchers if necessary
Dionaea (Venus Flytrap):
- Light: Full sun (4-6 hours direct sunlight)
- Water: Stand in 1-2 cm of water, always moist
- Humidity: Normal (40-60%)
- Temperature: 20-30°C summer, 5-10°C winter dormancy (important!)
- Soil: 50% moss + 50% perlite/sand
- Food: Catches flies on its own - feed MAX 1 time/month
- Winter Dormancy: Must have 3-4 months of cold rest (5-10°C) to survive
Sarracenia (Trumpet Pitcher Plant):
- Identical care as Dionaea
- Extremely hardy - tolerates Swedish winters outdoors!
- Requires winter dormancy
Drosera (Sundew):
- Bright location, can tolerate some direct sun
- Always moist in distilled water
- Most need winter dormancy
- Perfect for small terrariums
Why is my carnivorous plant drying out?
- Are you using tap water? (minerals kill the plant)
- Is it in almost dry soil? (they need constant moisture)
- Is Dionaea/Sarracenia getting winter dormancy? (mandatory)
Why are the pitchers/traps turning brown?
- It's normal for old pitchers/traps to die, new ones grow
- Too little light can prevent new traps from developing properly
- Over-fertilization or tap water
Can I feed my carnivorous plant?
Yes, but sparingly! They catch on their own in nature. If you want to feed:
- MAX 1 trap/pitcher at a time
- MAX 1 time per month
- Only LIVE or RECENTLY DEAD insects
- NEVER meat, cheese, or human food
Where should I place my carnivorous plant?
- Nepenthes: Bright window, terrarium, greenhouse
- Dionaea/Sarracenia: Sunny window (south-facing), outdoors in summer
- Drosera: Bright window, small terrariums
- Pinguicula: Bright window, can tolerate some direct sun
Perfect for:
- Terrariums (especially Nepenthes, small Drosera)
- Children and beginners (Dionaea is easiest!)
- Collectors of unique plants
- Natural mosquito and fly control
- Outdoor cultivation (Sarracenia, Dionaea with winter protection)
