Fast-growing, hardy pitcher plant with slender pitchers that turn completely dark red in full sun

Sarracenia × 'Tess' is a decorative horticultural hybrid of the North American carnivorous pitcher plant. The cultivar is characterized by its slender, upright pitchers which are often marked with green, red, or purple tones that intensify in full sun. In strong sunlight, the plant turns completely dark red and truly stands out.

Like other Sarracenia, the pitchers act as passive traps that attract and capture insects using nectar around the opening. The lid partially protects the trap's entrance while guiding insects down into the pitcher.

This is a vigorous and fast-growing pitcher plant that produces many pitchers during the growing season. It is very hardy and beautiful almost all year round, a must-have for anyone who wants a pitcher plant in their collection.

Care

Requires full sun for best color and growth. Perfect for growing in pots or outdoors. Use a nutrient-poor substrate of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand, never regular potting soil or fertilizer.

Place the pot in a tray with water to keep the substrate constantly moist, and water only with distilled or rainwater. Hardy down to about -10 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for outdoor cultivation in southern Sweden with some winter protection.

Winter dormancy is mandatory! The plant needs a cold resting period of 3-4 months to survive long-term.
