Best peat-free soil for houseplants -

Peat-free soil is a smarter choice for both your plants and the environment. Unlike regular potting soil, which often contains peat, peat-free potting soil is based on natural and renewable materials such as coconut fiber, bark and perlite. It provides better drainage, more oxygen to the roots and is especially suitable for tropical indoor plants such as Monstera, Philodendron and Alocasia.

Here we explain the difference and why peat-free is truly the best soil for your plants.

How to choose the right soil for your potted plants

We work almost exclusively with peat-free potting soil , and that's no coincidence. Peat is a common ingredient in many flower soils, but the mining of peat severely damages the environment.

Peat contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and destroys important wetlands. That's why we've chosen to invest in sustainable, plant-friendly substrates that are better for both the planet and your plants.

What is regular potting soil?

Regular potting soil is usually a mixture of:

Peat (as a base)

Sand or perlite

A little lime and nutrition

Peat is an organic material extracted from peat bogs in wetlands, which is a major environmental problem. When peat is mined, carbon dioxide is released, and important ecosystems are destroyed. At the same time, peat has some properties that have long made it popular: it retains moisture well and is cheap.

But for modern indoor plants, especially tropical species like Monstera, Alocasia, and Philodendron, peat is not always optimal. It compacts easily, drains poorly, and can lead to oxygen deprivation for the roots.

bad soil for houseplants

Our peat-free soil is based on materials such as coconut fiber (coir), orchid bark, perlite, worm castings and sphagnum moss, all carefully selected to promote growth, root health and moisture balance in pots.

Which soil should I choose for my plants?

We offer two types of growing soil, both peat-free, but with different properties:

Peat-free potting soil (All-round)

Suitable for most green houseplants.

The peat-free soil has a good structure for both moisture and oxygen. Perfect for small seedlings, cuttings and easy-care plants that are normally grown in 'regular' potting soil. Look at the roots, if they are small and hair-thin, this is the best soil.

Peat-free soil mix

This soil also works great if you want to replant green plants like pothos, palette leaves, calathea or aglaonema. You can add a little extra soil amendment , like worm castings or leca balls, to adjust as needed.

Aroid & orchid soil (Airy special mixture)

Perfect for tropical plants like Monstera, Philodendron, Alocasia and orchids. If the roots are as thick as spaghetti, this is the soil to choose.

This soil is extremely airy and well-draining , something these plants need. Because in nature they often don't actually grow in soil, but on tree branches or rocks. Sometimes the roots even grow completely without soil and collect moisture from the environment.

Because the soil is very coarse, it creates air pockets with high humidity that aerial roots require to thrive. This mix mirrors their natural environment and prevents root rot, an otherwise common problem.

How do you mix your own soil?

If you want to tailor a soil mix for a specific plant, you can easily mix it yourself with our peat-free substrates. It's easy to experiment by mixing the soil yourself.

Finding the right soil for you depends a lot on how often you water. If you water frequently, you should aim to mix an airy and well-drained soil. While if you water infrequently, it is better to mix a soil that holds water longer and is a little more compact.

Basic recipe for aroids (e.g. monstera, philodendron):

40% Orchid Bark

30% Sphagnum moss

20% perlite

10% worm fertilizer

For e.g. spices, parsley & other green plants

60% coconut fiber

20% worm fertilizer

20% perlite

Keep in mind that different plants have different needs. A plant that wants to stay moist (but not wet) may need more moss or coco, while a plant that is prone to root rot will do better in an airy mixture.

potting soil repotting

For tropical ornamental plants such as monstera, alocasia, aglaonema or philodendron, it is absolutely crucial to use the right soil. Otherwise, the roots risk becoming too wet or compacted.

Do I need to add plant nutrients?

In our planting soil, the nutrition from worm castings lasts for about 3-6 months. After this, use a balanced plant nutrient adapted for houseplants.
