Compact trumpet pitcher hybrid with red-veined lid that retains some leaves into winter

Sarracenia × 'Eva' is a decorative horticultural hybrid that produces numerous pitchers. Unlike many other Sarracenia, it retains some of its foliage late into winter, with some traps from the end of the season remaining even during dormancy.

With its finely sculpted, green lid veined with red and its neat size (about 20 to 25 centimetres for mature pitchers), this carnivorous plant easily finds its place in the home. The pitchers are curved and tapering, mainly green with red vein patterns around the neck and lids that are mottled in green and white. In summer, hanging, waxy flowers in green and dark red are produced on tall stems.

Care

Best grown under glass or in full sun with protection from strong midday sun. Use an acidic, nutrient-poor substrate with sphagnum moss, never regular potting soil or fertiliser. Keep constantly moist and water only with lime-free water such as distilled or rainwater.

During winter, keep it somewhat drier, cool, and well-ventilated. The plant usually loses some of its leaves during the dormant period. Ideal temperature during the growing season 18-28 degrees Celsius.

Most Sarracenia can be grown outdoors in milder parts of the country in a sunny location protected from cold winds. However, this variety is somewhat less hardy (approx. -5c) and we recommend overwintering it indoors. Winter dormancy is mandatory for long-term survival.
