Elegant highland nepenthes with slender, toothed red pitchers
Nepenthes singalana is a tropical pitcher plant endemic to the island of Sumatra, named after the volcanic Mount Singgalang in West Sumatra. There it grows at high altitudes between 2000 and 2900 meters and is one of the most underrated species among pitcher plants, with elegant, slender pitchers that vary in color from green and speckled to burgundy. The pitcher's "lip" is usually flared and starts bright red or orange but darkens to deep purple in good light, lined with prominent teeth.
Care
This is a highland species that prefers cooler conditions. Provide plenty of bright light. Ideal daytime temperature 18-25 degrees Celsius with a nighttime drop to 8-15 degrees; the nighttime drop is important for highland species.
Always keep moist with distilled or rainwater, never tap water. Use long-fiber sphagnum substrate mixed with perlite and coconut. Requires high humidity (60-80%).
Never fertilize the substrate – the pitchers catch their own nutrients. Excellent for hanging baskets or high places where the pitchers can hang freely.
