Primary hybrid between N. ventricosa and N. ampullaria, two spectacular parent species
The shape of the pitchers strongly resembles N. ampullaria, but the growth is robust and fast like N. ventricosa. The pitchers are absolutely bright red with an intensity that is difficult to convey in pictures; the color resembles a really good tomato!
The pitchers grow to about 15 centimeters long but usually remain a bit smaller. The plant bears a strikingly large number of pitchers simultaneously, making it a true spectacle.
The recurved lid is also striking, inherited from N. ampullaria. This allows rainwater to fall directly into the pitcher. While N. ampullaria lacks digestive fluid and instead collects fallen leaves that are decomposed by microorganisms (a vegetarian carnivorous plant!), 'Bloody Mary' has inherited digestive fluid from N. ventricosa. Therefore, be careful not to fill the pitchers too high with water when spraying or during outdoor summer stays, otherwise the digestive fluid will be diluted too much.
Care
Thrives in very bright conditions, preferably with direct sunlight. Protect from strong midday sun during the summer. In winter, as bright as possible, otherwise no pitchers will be produced.
Always keep moist but not like a bog plant; DO NOT place in standing water.
Can be moved outdoors in the summer to a sheltered but bright location. Nighttime temperatures down to about 18°C are not harmful and promote vigorous growth.
Only repot in nutrient-poor substrate, e.g., sphagnum mixed with about 30% perlite. DO NOT fertilize in the substrate; fertilization occurs through the pitchers.
Ideal temperature 20-30°C. Heat-loving species. Buy Nepenthes x Bloody Mary online!
