Compact hybrid pitcher plant with deep red pitchers and fragrant dark red spring flowers
Sarracenia × 'Maroon' is a compact, ruffled cross between S. purpurea and S. rubra (S. × chelsonii) with deep red coloration. Mature plants develop completely dark red pitchers, and the plant provides a strong color effect all year round, even during winter, a true rarity among pitcher plants.
The plant is of moderate height and originates from the wet pocosin bogs on the southeastern coast of the USA. The dark red flowers are fragrant and bloom in early spring.
Care
Prefers open, sunny, and bog-like conditions with full sun during the growing season. NEVER use regular potting soil or fertilizer; use a nutrient-poor substrate of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand.
Place the pot in a tray with water to keep the soil constantly moist, and water only with distilled or rainwater. Hardy in zone 1 and can therefore be grown outdoors.
Winter dormancy is mandatory; the plant needs a cold resting period of 3-4 months to survive long-term.
