Nepenthes × Gaya: Intensely colorful pitcher plant
Nepenthes × Gaya is a hybrid of N. khasiana × (ventricosa × maxima). It was hybridized and selected by Leilani Nepenthes in Colorado Springs, USA in 2004 and has since proven to be one of the hardiest and most beautiful Nepenthes to grow as a houseplant.
What is particularly striking about this hybrid is how many pitchers it has at once. On a single plant, it is common to have more than 10 pitchers active at the same time!
The ratio of pitchers to leaf size is amazing, the pitchers are almost exactly the same size as the leaves (if the plant gets enough light). Overall it remains quite compact with a diameter of around 30 cm.
Botanical description
The pitchers grow "only" about 15 cm in good conditions and are bright red with yellow spots. The bright red rim and the light interior create a striking contrast. The lid of the pitcher is particularly beautifully marbled.
The shape of the pitchers is rounded and slightly chubby, with a prominent "hip" and rounded bottom. The pitchers are almost exactly the same size as the leaves of this hybrid.
Care
Light : Likes a lot of light, preferably with direct sunlight. In summer, however, it should be protected from strong midday sun. In winter, as much light as possible, otherwise it will not produce any pitchers.
Watering : Should always be kept moist but is not a swamp plant. Do not keep it in standing water.
Substrate : Replant only in nutrient-poor substrate such as unfertilized coconut soil or sphagnum mixed with about 30% perlite.
Fertilization : Do not fertilize in the substrate. Fertilization is done through the pots - 1-3 Osmocote pellets (or other weak long-term plant nutrient) per pot (depending on size) every four months is sufficient.
Temperature : In summer, preferably outdoors in a sheltered but bright place. Night temperatures down to about 15°C are not harmful and promote vigorous growth.
Spray : No need to spray the plant or the pots.
When kept outdoors in the summer, no fertilization is needed as the plant catches enough insects to feed itself. Buy pitcher plant Nepenthes Gaya online!
