Harmless plants for dogs and cats
Having plants and flowers at home is something many people appreciate, but for those of us with pets, it is important to choose plants that are safe. There are many flowers that cats can tolerate, but also flowers that are toxic to cats and should therefore be avoided. Here we go through both cat-friendly plants and flowers that can be dangerous for your cat.
Cat-friendly plants
There are several cat-safe flowers that are both beautiful and pet-friendly. Calathea is a popular cat-friendly flower with its green leaves in various patterns and colors. Other flowers that are not toxic to cats include banana plant, hearts on wire and some types of ferns. These flowers are safe even if your cat were to taste them.
Poisonous plants for cats
Unfortunately, many common plants and flowers that we love can be dangerous for our cats. Examples of poisonous houseplants for cats are cold plants such as monstera, philodendron, alocasia as well as begonias and some hoyas. If your cat has eaten one of these flowers, it can lead to serious poisoning in the worst case, with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Flowers poisonous to cats should always be kept out of the reach of animals.
What to do if your cat has eaten a poisonous plant
If you suspect that your cat has eaten plants toxic to cats, it is important to act quickly. Always contact a veterinarian if you suspect your cat is in danger.
It's good to know which flowers can be harmless plants for cats and which ones you should avoid. Some flowers, even if only mildly toxic, can cause problems in small amounts. If you have poisonous flowers at home, be sure to place them in a place where the cat cannot reach them, or remove them completely.
