A gigantic staghorn fern that can grow over 2 meters in diameter!
Platycerium superbum is a very large staghorn fern from eastern Australia. This species produces two different types of leaves. The regular, and in older plants the spore-bearing leaves, and the so-called "basal leaves" or "shield leaves", which are sterile.
The leaves of P. superbum are branched and covered with small hairs that protect against drying out. The leaves grow almost 2 meters long. The fronds are also hairy and cling to the substrate, protecting the rhizome and roots. Older fronds die and turn brown but remain on the fern.
In this species, the bracts form an open-topped funnel where leaves and other organic waste collect. This mass is broken down by microorganisms into compost that serves as nutrition for the fern.
Botanical description
P. superbum is one of the largest species of staghorn fern and is native to eastern Australia. Its general size is a defining characteristic of the species.

Unlike many species, P. superbum does not produce suckers (side shoots), which is normally the fastest method of producing new plants. If you want to propagate new plants, spore propagation is the only method available.
Care
P. superbum grows best mounted or attached to the side of a support, such as cork or wooden plank, where it can develop the shape it also takes in nature.
Mount the fern on a sturdy wooden plank that can support its possible weight and place it where its hanging leaves have room to hang freely.
As the plant matures, avoid moving it. Instead, attach the existing mount to progressively larger planks.
Water regularly by moistening the mounting surface and allowing water to run through the basal leaves. The fern appreciates high humidity and thrives in warm, humid conditions. Buy Platycerium superbum online!
