Easy-to-grow hanging or groundcover plant with intensely pink leaves
In sufficient light, the pointed, 5-10 centimeter long leaves take on a striking pink color with two greenish-silvery longitudinal stripes running from the base to the tip.
The plant blooms with small pink flowers typical of the Tradescantia genus. It is very easy to care for and undemanding, growing easily in almost any location, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced plant lovers.
Botanical description
Tradescantia zebrina is originally native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia, but is also found in the Caribbean islands. It has been naturalized in parts of Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, and various oceanic islands.
In its natural habitat, the plant grows in scrub in wetlands and rainforests, often on rocks in shady and open areas or along riverbeds at altitudes up to 2000 meters, but mainly at lower altitudes. It acts as a ground cover in tropical and subtropical forests.
Care
Thrives in mild conditions, no direct sun but preferably partial shade, warm temperatures around or above 20°C and regular watering. The plant can be allowed to dry out from time to time but ideally always keep slightly moist.
Fertilize relatively lightly, for example with orchid fertilizer about every two weeks during the growing season. With too much fertilizer and/or too little light, the plant will quickly stretch and no longer grow as beautifully compact. If this happens, you can simply prune it and let it grow again, preferably under better conditions.
Plant in loose soil with good drainage. Perfect as a hanging plant where the pink leaves can hang freely. Propagated very easily by stem cuttings that root quickly in water or soil. Buy zebra leaves online!
