Perfect ground cover plant for the terrarium
Selaginella martensii is one of the most common mosses in cultivation. The primitive The mosses , which have existed since the Paleozoic, are often counted among "fern relatives" but are neither mosses nor ferns, but belong to the moss family.
Selaginella martensii is a larger species from Mexico and other Central American countries up to Panama that grows about 20-30 centimeters tall and at least as wide. Its shoots, about 6-7 millimeters wide, grow upwards to horizontally, are covered with rows of small leaves and branch strongly, reminiscent of fern fronds. They send "aerial roots" to the ground, actually so-called rhizophores from which the true roots grow. The shoot tips are often very light colored, almost creamy white.
With its spreading, leaf-like branching and "primitive" appearance, Selaginella martensii is a beautiful plant on the terrarium floor. This deciduous plant is a taller ground cover for tropical rainforest and subtropical moist forest terrariums.
Botanical description
The natural range of this species is Mexico to Central America.
Most The mosslumer species are found in the tropics and subtropics, with some in colder zones. S. martensii is one of the larger species with shoots that resemble fern fronds due to their strong branching and dense leaf cover.
The plant is neither a true moss nor a fern, but belongs to its own ancient plant group that has existed since before the time of the dinosaurs. This ancient lineage gives the plant a characteristic "prehistoric" appearance.
Care
For optimal growth , Selaginella martensii should be placed in full or partial shade. It prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil, such as a mix rich in organic matter or coco peat, that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. For example , sphagnum moss or our peat-free soil.
Regular watering is necessary as this species does not tolerate drought well, but allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water frequently or use a moisture tray/ watering mat to maintain moisture levels.
Maintain a warm, humid environment with daytime temperatures of 18-24°C and nighttime temperatures between 15-18°C. Temperatures around 20°C are optimal, 15°C should not be dropped below for extended periods.
High humidity, preferably above 70%, is essential for plant health. This is a semi-shade plant and should be placed in moderate light, but without direct sun if grown in daylight.
Propagate by stem cuttings or division. Perfect as a ground cover in a terrarium where it creates a lush, prehistoric feel. Buy Selaginella martensii online!
