Licuala grandis, one of the most elegant small palms with large, pleated fan leaves.
This impressive palm grows up to 3 meters tall with a slender trunk 5-6 centimeters in diameter, crowned by a magnificent crown of leaves.
The leaves are round and unwrinkled, often over 55 centimeters in diameter, with a characteristic pleated structure. The glossy, deep green leaves are held upright when young, while older leaves curve elegantly.
Botanical description
Licuala grandis belongs to the palm family Arecaceae and is native to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands east of Australia. The species grows naturally in the moist, shady undergrowth of the rainforests of these regions. It is a relatively slow-growing palm.
The unique folded structure and circular shape of the leaves make this species easily recognizable among other palm species. It belongs to the undergrowth and is adapted to grow in the shade under larger trees or indoors.
Care
Licuala grandis thrives best in moist soil and when mature it can stand in full sun as long as humidity is high. In subtropical areas with longer dry periods the palm needs shade and regular watering.
Young plants need bright indirect light, while older specimens can tolerate more sun if humidity is high and summer temperatures are not too high. Plant in well-drained soil that is nutrient-rich and evenly moist, such as our peat-free soil .
Indoors, it becomes a beautiful palm in a pot as long as it gets plenty of light, warmth and the soil never gets dry. The palm responds positively to frequent, light fertilization.
Keep the temperature above 3°C, although there are documented cases where Licuala grandis has survived down to -1.5°C. Buy Licuala grandis online!
