Plants that thrive in indirect light
Everyone loves green plants, but it's not always easy to find the right place in the home for them to thrive. The solution we suggest is plants that thrive in shade and can handle indirect light! These Easy-care plants are real survivors and are perfect for those who don't have a home with bright windows or lots of sunlight.
Can a plant get too much light?
In fact, many common indoor green plants actually prefer to be out of direct sunlight. Too much light can burn the leaves and cause them to lose their beautiful green color. Plants like climbing calla lilies or a classic potted palm are examples of plants that can tolerate darkness, although they won't thrive as well as they would in indirect light. An example of a shady or dark light level is a bathroom, a hallway without windows, or a basement.
Here are some favorites among houseplants that thrive in shade:
- Climbing Calla : A beautiful indoor climbing plant that gives a modern and green feel without requiring direct sunlight.
- Moses stone tablets : A charming and extremely easy-care plant that thrives in dark corners or as a decoration on a growing shelf.
- Peace lily: One of the most popular and common houseplants, which also helps purify the air in the home.
- Calathea: Calatheas such as round calathea, wavy leaf calathea and calathea triostar grow large even in low light levels.
- Elkhorn fern: A type of fern with long, pointed leaves that grow up to half a meter long. Our other ferns also thrive best in indirect light but can tolerate shade.
- Peperomias: Many of our peperomia varieties are best grown in indirect light but can also be grown in shade, although they often grow very slowly.
Plants and shady environments
Need tips on plants for the shade? You can easily create greenery even in homes with few hours of sunlight. Shade plants such as ferns, monsteras and certain types of palm trees are perfect for brightening up dark rooms. For even better results, you can supplement with indoor plant lighting.
Why should you choose plants that don't need a lot of light?
These are often easy-care plants that don't require constant care and tending. Perfect for rooms with limited natural light, such as bathrooms, bedrooms or offices. Many of these shade-loving plants are also humidifiers and improve indoor air quality.
Tips for success
Plants in the shade often need soil that doesn't hold too much moisture, to avoid root rot. If it's really dark, you can also invest in indoor grow lights to boost your green plants. Plants in the shade also need less water because they don't dry out as quickly as plants in direct sunlight.
Do you want green plants that can tolerate darkness or perhaps an easy-care climbing plant indoors? Explore our wide range and create a tropical room with plants that thrive in shade, no matter how light or dark your indoor environment is!
