Fern from Southeast Asia and Australia with new leaves in red, orange, and bronze

Adiantum hispidulum belongs to the maidenhair ferns and originates from Southeast Asia as well as the tropical parts of Australia and East Africa. There, it grows in damp, shady environments, in the soil, on moist rocks, or epiphytically on moss-covered tree trunks.

The plant reaches a height and width of approximately 40 to 50 centimeters, with individual fronds up to 30 centimeters long. The fronds are divided into short, narrow, elliptical leaflets that are light green, curved, and have a slightly wavy edge.

The color of the new leaves is what stands out: they first emerge reddish, then transition into orange to bronze before maturing to green.

Although the species resembles our native maidenhair ferns, it is not hardy and should therefore only be grown as a houseplant or in a terrarium.

Care

Thrives in partial shade to shade; avoid direct sun. Keep the soil evenly moist and never let it dry out completely.

Requires high humidity, preferably 60 percent or more. Dry indoor air is the most common cause of the leaves becoming brown and brittle. Use an airy, moisture-retentive soil.

Ideal temperature 18-24 degrees Celsius. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season. Buy ferns online!
