Undescribed Ecuadorian Anthurium with prominent veins

Anthurium 'Portillae' has a partially unresolved history. Dewey Fisk brought back several different specimens from the northern forests of Ecuador during the 1990s. The plants are likely their own species, but none of them have been scientifically recognized or described.

One of them is the plant we call Anthurium 'OG Portillae' today, which was passed on from Fisk to Enid Offolter at NSE Tropicals.

Enid Offolter developed this plant from Fisk through numerous selection processes and unfortunately undocumented, open, or contaminated pollinations into, among others, Anthurium 'NSE Portillae', 'Portilloi', and 'Dorito Port', or alternatively, the original plant served as the basis for these cultivars. As is often the case, there are only oral traditions regarding this process, the parent plants, and the development of 'Portillae', and unfortunately no written documentation.

Versions or stages of these cultivars likely reached Indonesia at an unknown time, giving rise to the plants that are sold extensively today under the name Anthurium 'Indo Portillae'. Phenotypically, these actually resemble Anthurium sp. nov. 'df' more, one of the other specimens brought back by Fisk from Ecuador. We can therefore only speculate and place these plants, like so many other plants in the Anthurium hobby, in the category of mysteries.

Care

Thrives in partial shade to bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun. Requires high humidity (70-80% or more), making it best suited for a terrarium or plant cabinet.

Keep the substrate evenly moist but never soggy. Use a very airy, well-draining substrate with bark, perlite, and sphagnum. Ideal temperature 20-26 degrees Celsius.
