Giant Tillandsia from Mexico

Tillandsia xerographica is a very large-growing tillandsia from southern Mexico, with a diameter of up to 80 centimeters and flower spikes up to 1 meter long. The name comes from the Greek (xeros), meaning "dry," and (graphia), meaning "writing."

The plant has hard, broad leaves with heavy scaling, giving it a dull white appearance. In larger specimens, the leaves are spirally twisted. It usually grows solitarily with only a few offsets and produces yellow flowers on long, red flower stalks.

Botanical description

Tillandsia xerographica is native to southern Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Average temperatures in its habitat range from 22°C to 28°C, with relative humidity between 60% and 72%. This is one of the largest tillandsias in existence.

Care

The species comes from an arid region. Place it by a south or west-facing window in direct sun. In summer, it can also be grown outdoors. Spray heavily or briefly dip every 3-5 days.
