Easy-to-care-for South American air plant with stiff rosette and pink-purple flowers

Tillandsia stricta is a fascinating and versatile species within the bromeliad family, native to South America and particularly to Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. It has captivated the interest of botanists and collectors alike thanks to its striking appearance and minimal care requirements.

Unlike most plants, Tillandsia stricta is epiphytic, meaning it absorbs moisture and nutrients directly from the air through its leaves rather than through roots in soil. This unique adaptation allows it to thrive in diverse environments, from humid forests to drier regions.

The plant has stiff, narrow leaves that form a rosette, creating a distinctive silhouette. When in bloom, it produces vibrant flowers, typically pink or purple.

As the plant matures, it naturally begins to produce offshoots, known as "pups". These emerge from the base of the mother plant and gradually develop into miniature versions of the parent. Initially, they remain attached, drawing nutrients and moisture from the mother plant, which supports their early growth. Once the pups have reached approximately one-third to half the size of the mother plant, they can be carefully separated.

Care

Tillandsia stricta is appreciated for its easy care and adaptability, making it an ideal plant for those with little time or who don't have a green thumb.

It requires bright, indirect light and good air circulation to thrive. Regular misting or soaking once or twice a week usually provides sufficient moisture, although the frequency varies depending on the humidity of the environment.

Always ensure the plant dries thoroughly after watering; standing water in the center of the rosette will cause rot. Ideal temperature 18-28 degrees Celsius.

It can be mounted on bark, cork or wood, or placed freely in a bowl or holder.
