Southeast Asian plant with metallic purple-pink striped leaves
Strobilanthes is a truly eye-catching member of the acanthus plant family (Acanthaceae), originally from Southeast Asia but now spread as a neophyte throughout the tropics worldwide. The species' natural distribution extends from Bangladesh to Thailand, where it primarily grows in wet tropical biotopes.
This is an extremely vigorous plant that, under the right conditions, quickly reaches its maximum size of approximately 1 meter in height and width, and also flowers abundantly and for a long time. The blue-violet flowers are very beautiful but almost fade in comparison to the extremely striking colored leaves. These, with sufficient light, are adorned with broad, metallic purple to pink stripes on the upper side.
Care
Strobilanthes are generally quite robust plants that forgive minor care mistakes and are therefore well-suited for beginners.
Thrives in bright light; sufficient light is crucial to bring out the intense purple color and metallic stripes on the leaves. Keep the soil evenly moist but well-drained. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius with high humidity.
Regularly pinch back the shoots to keep the plant compact and bushy, as it can otherwise become leggy. Fertilize monthly during the growing season.
