A caudex-forming plant from northern Thailand with a fascinating life cycle
During the monsoon season, Stephania pierrei forms long vines with beautiful, circular, shield-shaped leaves from its caudex. At the beginning of the dry season, the vines die back and the plant survives the dry months as just a leafless caudex. With the next monsoon, the cycle begins again.
In our temperate climate, it usually grows in summer and then loses its vines in autumn or winter. The species is well-described and originates from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, where it grows in evergreen and deciduous forests, as well as in open ground and scrubland.
It is sometimes sold as 'Stephania erecta' but that is an incorrect name for the same species.
Care
Water generously during the growing season when vines develop. Drastically reduce watering when the leaves begin to yellow and die back; the caudex should be kept almost dry during dormancy. Thrives in bright conditions. Well-drained soil is crucial.
Ideal temperature 20-30°C during growth, cooler (15-20°C) during dormancy. Buy Stephania pierrei online!
