Variegated "string of pearls" from South Africa, easy-care hanging plant with bead-shaped leaves
Curio rowleyanus (syn. Senecio rowleyanus), known as "string of pearls", is a creeping, perennial succulent from the Cape Province in South Africa. In its natural habitat, the stems crawl on the ground, rooting where they touch and forming dense mats. It often avoids direct sunlight by growing in the shade of other plants and rocks.
The vines can grow over a meter long, and with the right conditions, it can also bloom with small white flowers. String of pearls is a fun and unusual plant that looks great with its vines hanging down from a shelf or, why not, in a hanging basket. The variegated variety has extra charm with its mottled pearls.
Care
Like most succulents, it requires very infrequent watering (about once a month), a few hours of direct sunlight, and is not affected by humidity. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot, so airy soil is recommended, such as our peat-free soil.
This plant can be easily propagated by cuttings; cut or pinch off 10 centimeters of a healthy stem tip and lightly cover with moist potting soil. Roots develop quickly from where the leaves are attached to the stem.
Thrives indoors or outdoors (above freezing) and is considered easy to care for. Ideal temperature 18-26°C. Buy String of Pearls online!
