Hardy pitcher plant with white, red-veined pitchers that can reach nearly a meter
Sarracenia leucophylla is endemic to the southeastern United States, like all pitcher plants native to North America. The species bears clusters of upright, hollow pitchers, where the upper part is white with a red-purple vein pattern, crowned by an upright, round lid with a wavy edge. The flowers are nodding and brownish-red.
The species varies greatly in height, and plants in some locations reach nearly a meter.
Despite its origins in the southeastern United States, it is remarkably hardy and can be grown outdoors even in Zones 1-2 and colder with careful winter protection, which in practice means outdoor cultivation in large parts of southern and central Sweden.
Care
Requires full sun for the best color and growth. Use a nutrient-poor substrate of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand; never use regular potting soil or fertilizer.
In cultivation, this species is generally less tolerant of standing water than many other pitcher plants and requires sufficient drainage, while the moisture level must be maintained to avoid root rot. Keep the substrate evenly moist and preferably water with distilled or rainwater.
Winter dormancy is mandatory; the plant needs a cold rest period of 3 to 4 months to survive long-term.
