Dutch hybrid with upright pitchers that shift from green and white to red and cream-yellow

Sarracenia 'Fiona' is a Dutch hybrid between the North American species Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia purpurea. It forms a rosette of thick, upright pitchers that grow to about 30 centimeters tall.

The pitchers emerge in pink and pale green with a white net pattern towards the top. As they mature, the green veins turn bright red while the white net pattern shifts towards cream-yellow, and older pitchers take on a wine-red hue. An established clump therefore displays several color stages simultaneously. The flowers are dark red and appear in the spring.

Care

Requires full sun. Use an acidic, nutrient-poor substrate with moss; never use regular potting soil or fertilizer. Keep the substrate moist and water only with lime-free water, preferably distilled or rainwater.

During the winter, keep it slightly drier, cool, and well-ventilated. The plant usually loses some of its pitchers during the dormant period.

Most Sarracenia can be grown outdoors in milder parts of the country in a sunny location protected from cold winds. Winter dormancy is mandatory for long-term survival.
