Rhaphidophora decursiva: Fairly cold-resistant tropical climber
Individual finds from Nepal and Bhutan show that the species is considerably more cold-hardy than one would expect. We cannot say for sure whether it can also withstand frost, but the documented occurrence at the foot of the Himalayas suggests so.
In nature, it grows as a vigorous, up to 20-meter-long climber with aerial roots up in trees. All parts of the plant are surprisingly firm and robust. When the plant is allowed to climb, for example on a moss stake, it forms up to 1 meter long, pinnate leaves!
At first it grows quite slowly and compactly, but develops its impressive leaves when given the right conditions.
Botanical description
Rhaphidophora decursiva is native to China, northern India, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar. It grows in tropical as well as subtropical and temperate climates.
Care
Light : Needs plenty of indirect light to develop its large, characteristic leaves.
Climbing support : Requires climbing assistance, for example in the form of a coconut stick or similar support, to be able to develop its full potential.
Growth : Grows slowly and compactly at first but becomes more vigorous once established.
Robustness : All parts of the plant are surprisingly firm and robust, making it a durable plant for the home.
Temperature : More cold-hardy than many other tropical climbing plants, making it easier to grow in Swedish homes.
An excellent climbing plant for those who want large, spectacular leaves and have space for a growing plant with climbing support.
