A small, ornamental plant from Asia with silver spots on the leaves
The individual stems can grow up to around 30 centimetres tall, but with enough light the plant remains much more compact at only around 10 centimetres. This makes it perfect as a ground cover in tropical terrariums, although it does need to be pruned regularly to prevent it from becoming too sprawling.
The plant is sometimes called "cannon flower" because its inflorescences explosively eject their pollen at the slightest touch. It blooms with small, white flowers that appear closely together in inflorescences on short stems.
Despite belonging to the nettle family (Urticaceae), this species is completely harmless and easy to care for as both a houseplant and terrarium plant.
Botanical description
Pilea cadierei is native to Vietnam and southern China but has since been introduced to Central and South America where it grows as an invasive species. The flowering period in its native range extends from September to November.

The plant belongs to the nettle family but lacks the stinging properties of nettles. It has very thin roots which affects substrate selection and watering requirements. The species is non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses and therefore safe to have around pets.
Care
Thrives in partial shade, place by a south or west window protected from direct sun. Although it tolerates permanent moisture, it is better to water sparingly and let the surface dry out occasionally between waterings.
Plant in loose substrate which should however be finely structured due to the very thin roots, our peat-free soil is good. Fertilize sparingly, preferably in half or even 1/4 of the manufacturer's recommended concentration.
If the plant gets too big, it can be easily pruned. The cut off shoots root well in water and can be replanted to create a dense, beautiful plant. Ideal temperature 18-24°C. Easily propagated by cuttings. Buy Silverpilea online!
