Philodendron serpens: Fuzzy stems and red leaves
Philodendron serpens is an impressive climbing plant belonging to the Araceae family. This tropical plant stands out with its large, heart-shaped leaves and very shaggy stems.
Botanical Description
Philodendron serpens comes from the Andes mountain range in Ecuador and Colombia. The species naturally grows at altitudes between 700-1500m. It has a climbing stem that is covered with persistent dark brown, fibrous scales. The stem becomes most leafy at the top where the active growth occurs.
The leaves are really the main attraction of the plant. They are bright green, leathery and have a broad arrow shape with a pointed top and heart-shaped base.
A fully developed leaf can be impressively large - between 30-45 cm long and 14-18 cm wide. The petioles are green, round and about the same length as the leaf itself, covered in small, dense projections that help the plant attach itself when climbing.
Care
Light: Philodendron Serpens thrives best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can burn the leaves.
Soil & pot: A porous and well-drained soil is recommended, e.g. our aroid soil . When repotting, make sure the pot is well-drained, orchid pots are often a good alternative.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry between waterings.
Humidity: The plant appreciates high humidity (50-60%), in winter the air often becomes slightly drier than this indoors. Yellow leaf edges are sometimes difficult to avoid without a humidifier.
Temperature: Does best in temperatures between 18-24°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Support: Since this is a climbing plant, it needs support to grow upwards. A moss stake is best.
Fertilization: Fertilize moderately during the growing season (spring-summer) with a balanced plant fertilizer.
