Oak-leaf-like philodendron with deep red petioles, leaf shape changes dramatically with age

Philodendron pedatum is a lobed philodendron where the leaf incisions resemble oak leaves, although the forms develop more individually and slenderly. In contrast to the leaves, the deep red petioles stand out, giving the plant an elegant and impressive look despite the considerable size it can achieve with climbing support.

The species was described in 1841 and is one of the most difficult philodendrons to identify because it produces an enormous variety of leaf shapes throughout its life. This has led to it being given a range of different scientific names over the years, and many collectors still insist on calling it Philodendron quercifolium, Philodendron laciniatum, or simply "unknown species". However, the accepted scientific name is Philodendron pedatum.

The leaves are medium to dark green with a slight reddish-brown tint. This is an epiphytic climber that shows its natural beauty best when allowed to climb something tall. As with many other philodendrons, the leaf shape collectors are used to seeing looks nothing like the fully grown form; the lobes become significantly narrower as the leaves mature. In cultivation, however, the leaves rarely reach their fully mature stage.

Botanical description

The species has an extremely wide distribution and occurs in rainforest areas from the southernmost parts of Central America through Colombia, Venezuela, the entire Guiana Shield, and deep into Brazil. In the western part of South America, it can be seen through Ecuador into parts of Peru and Bolivia.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Water when the soil has dried out slightly. Requires high humidity and well-drained, airy soil. Provide climbing support such as a moss pole; the higher the support, the larger and more developed the leaves. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius.
