A hardy species from Brazil's drier landscapes that thrives excellently as a houseplant
Philodendron mayoi comes from the state of Goiás in central Brazil, where it grows in open, fairly dry environments. It is similar to species such as Philodendron bipinnatifidum , with its deeply lobed leaves, but is distinguished by a few distinct characteristics: the orange-red petioles and veins. The color becomes especially intense during the summer when the plant receives a lot of light.
The leaves are shiny, leathery and heavily lobed, with more rounded “ribs” than in many similar species. Full-grown leaves grow to about 50 cm long, and the plant remains relatively compact in shape.
Botanical description
This species is common in ravines along streams or on limestone cliffs. Young plants often grow creeping along the ground.
Flowers have only been observed in specimens that live as hemiepiphytes, i.e. plants that begin their lives on the ground but climb up and later rely on other plants for support.
Care instructions
This is a hardy species that can handle both drier air and occasional dehydration. It is therefore very suitable as an indoor plant, even in homes with lower humidity. In the summer, it feels extra good outside, preferably on a balcony or in the garden with protection from strong midday sun. To get larger leaves, a plant support is required.
