Philodendron maximum is known as one of the world's largest Philodendron species!
Philodendron maximum truly lives up to its name. This species stands out with its incredibly glossy leaves that can grow to be 90-120 centimetres long. The leaves are made even more beautiful by the distinct cream-coloured veins that run through them. For this plant to grow at its best, it needs a lot of space, but when it is given enough space, the results are truly amazing.
These tropical climbers are strong and have well-developed root systems. They are known as hemiepiphytes, meaning they can start life as a seed on a tree branch that then sends roots into the ground, or as a seed on the ground that germinates and then attaches itself to a tree and begins to climb.
Botanical description
Philodendron maximum was scientifically described and published in 1913 and can be found from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil at altitudes between 106 to 800 meters above sea level.

The type specimen of Philodendron maximum was described from a specimen from Brazil at the Rio Paraguassu in November 1911. The species is known to grow in old leaf bases of palms, especially Attalea phalerata. These palm leaf bases persist for decades and large amounts of humus accumulate in them, providing Philodendron maximum with an excellent source of nutrition.
The species does not usually climb to extreme heights and is typically seen only 3-3.5 meters up the side of a host tree. However, what the plant lacks in climbing ability it makes up for in leaf size. The leaves are semi-glossy medium green to dark green and slightly more glossy on the upper side than the lower side.
Care
Grow the plant climbing on a moss pole or other stable support in a fast-draining soil mix with porous soil containing e.g. sphagnum, perlite or orchid soil containing bark or coconut fiber. The soil mix should be kept slightly moist at all times. Our aroid soil is a good fit.
Give the plant plenty of space as it produces extremely large leaves. A small pot or limited space will prevent the plant from reaching its full potential.
Place in bright, indirect light. Since the species naturally grows on palm trees in open areas and dry forests, this provides clues about light requirements and water conditions. It thrives in relatively bright conditions compared to many other Philodendron species. Buy Philodendron maximum online!
