Beautiful creeping & groundcover plant from Asia

In a terrarium it can be grown as a ground cover or as a hanging plant, for example on the back wall. As a potted plant it looks best in a hanging basket. The stems grow up to about 1 meter long.

The plant develops very different leaf colors and shapes depending on how much light it receives. In low light, the leaves become small, rounded, and almost completely black. With plenty of light, the leaves become elongated (up to about 10 centimeters long) and only the leaf edges become dark, while the center becomes silvery and light green.

Both leaf shapes can occur on the same plant depending on how much light each part receives. The flowers are insignificant yellowish and are borne on long, upright flower stalks.

Botanical description

Pellionia repens grows as a ground cover in shady areas of the understory of rainforests in Southeast Asia. It is a member of the nettle family but lacks the stinging hairs that many of its relatives have.

The species is closely related to Pilea species and shares many similar characteristics, including the ability to grow quickly and densely.

Care

Place in bright to moderate light depending on the desired leaf shape. More light produces longer, silvery leaves while less light produces darker, rounder leaves.

Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. The plant thrives in moist conditions. Thrives in high humidity which makes it perfect for terrariums.

Prune regularly to keep the plant compact and prevent it from becoming too sparse. Clipped stems root easily in water or moist soil.

Use well-drained, nutrient-rich soil such as our peat-free soil. Fertilize moderately during the growing season. Buy Pellionia repens online!
