Timeless Mediterranean tree, can live for thousands of years with proper care
The olive tree (Olea europaea) is one of the world's oldest and most culturally significant trees, originating from the Mediterranean region where it has been cultivated for over 6000 years.
The olive tree is a slow-growing tree that, with proper care, can live for thousands of years. Indoors in a pot, it remains compact and manageable. Under optimal conditions, it can produce edible olives, but this typically requires outdoor exposure and sufficient sunlight for flowering and fruit set.
Care
The olive tree is adapted to dry, sunny climates and is more tolerant of drought than overwatering. Place it in the sunniest spot you can offer and ideally move it outdoors in the summer. It is hardy down to about -10 degrees Celsius but should be protected from prolonged periods of severe frost.
Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems. Use well-draining soil, preferably with an admixture of sand or perlite. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a universal fertilizer.
The olive tree needs a cool and bright winter location (5-10 degrees Celsius) to thrive long-term and possibly flower and bear fruit. Buy olive trees online!
