Rare high-altitude variant from Veracruz, Mexico with small leaves and possible connection to var. borsigiana

Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana is a rare tropical aroid with large, decorative leaves featuring abundant holes and incisions along the edges. In nature, the plant climbs trees by wrapping its aerial roots around the trunk.

According to the original description from 1965, the species may be a variant of Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana found in the mountains of southern Veracruz in Mexico, described as a high-altitude variant with very small leaves and inflorescences. The taxonomy is still under discussion among botanists, and it is possible that it will be classified as its own species in the future.

Similar to Monstera deliciosa but smaller in scale, making it more manageable and actually more suitable for flower arrangements than the larger M. deliciosa. It can be used as an indoor potted plant or grown outdoors in a frost-free environment. Plant it at the base of a palm or tree trunk and it will climb, adding a tropical feel.

Care

Thrives best in shade to partial shade with regular watering. Keep the soil evenly moist but well-drained. Provide climbing support such as a moss pole or tree trunk for optimal growth and leaf development. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius with high humidity.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Does not tolerate frost.
