Try to find a cuter monster-a!
Monstera deliciosa has become an incredibly popular houseplant in recent years. Monstera is easy to care for and has large, broad, light green leaves that develop holes and lobes as the plant matures. The name ' deliciosa' was given to the plant because of its tropical fruits that taste like pineapple and are widely eaten in the tropics.
Botanical description
Monstera deliciosa originates from the Mexican states of Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas and Guatemala in Central America. There it grows wild in tropical areas as an epiphyte, i.e. growing on other plants. Monstera deliciosa is the most common species of the approximately 60 species in the Monstera genus.
Care
Soil: Monstera deliciosa absolutely thrives best in an airy, well-drained soil. We recommend using a lot of perlite and bark chips in the soil. Alternatively, you can buy a ready-made soil for monstera here.
Water: Monstera should be watered when the soil is almost completely dry. If you are unsure, it is best to wait a day or so before watering the plant.
Light: Monsteras thrive in indirect sunlight and should therefore be placed inside a room with a sunny window.
Plant support: To get large leaves and a generally beautiful growth, we recommend purchasing a mosspole or plant support for the monstera. Tie up the aerial roots and stem to the support, then the plant will feel secure and can form larger leaves!
Appearance
The leaves are large, heart-shaped to oval, and become deeply lobed and perforated as they mature. The young leaves are entire and without holes. Mature leaves can be up to 90 cm long and 60 cm wide.
Monstera deliciosa is a climbing plant that uses its aerial roots to attach itself to supports and climb upwards. In its natural habitat, it can climb up to 10 meters high.
The flowers are creamy white and can develop into edible fruits under the right conditions. The fruit, sometimes called "Mexican breadfruit", is oblong and green. When ripe, it tastes sweet and aromatic.
Proliferation
Monstera can be propagated by stem cuttings . Cut a section of the stem with at least one leaf and some aerial roots, and place in water until roots or a shoot develop.
With the right care, this Monstera deliciosa can grow large and its unique foliage can bring a tropical feel to your home. Buy Monstera deliciosa online!
