It is called "Burle Marx's Flame", inspired by the young leaves that resemble an upside-down flame.
The leaves of this Monstera are deeply lobed almost all the way to the midrib, with narrow, curved segments (pinnately lobed). Only very large specimens develop a few small holes along the midrib.
As a young plant it is easy to recognize, as it looks surprisingly different compared to other Monsteras. The young leaves are very narrow, rarely wider than 3 cm and the plant is considerably firmer and more robust than other species in the genus. If you touch the leaves you can immediately feel whether it is a Burle Marx's Flame or not.
Botanical description.
Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame' originally comes from the collection of Brazilian plant collector and artist Roberto Burle Marx. However, it is unclear where the plant actually originated, whether it is a natural species or a cultivated form.
It began to spread from his collection in 1981. In appearance, it most closely resembles Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana , but it is not confirmed whether it is a variant of M. deliciosa or something else entirely. It belongs to the section Tornelia within the genus Monstera, a group that is only found naturally in Central America, suggesting that it probably comes from there, and not from Brazil.
It is definitely not a Monstera dilacerata .
Care.
This plant thrives best in warm temperatures, preferably above 20°C, and requires even, moderate humidity. In order for it to develop its mature, fully lobed leaves, it needs something to climb on, such as a moss stake.
Plant Monstera burle marx flame in a very airy and nutrient-poor soil mixture, preferably something that mimics the natural soil of the rainforest. A good mix can consist of bark pieces, white moss (sphagnum moss) and perlite. You can either mix it yourself, or use our ready-made Aroid soil that is ready to use straight from the bag.
Unfortunately, it also grows significantly slower than other Monstera, probably due to its compact and vigorous growth. Buy Monstera Burle Marx Flame online!
