Thai Mountain Hoya with Grass-Scented White Flowers

Hoya mirabilis is a small climbing epiphyte from Thailand that was scientifically described in 2012. It was found in a place called Khao Laem and was initially simply called Hoya sp. Khao Laem.

The species is believed to be closely related to the common Hoya lacunosa; the flowers look quite similar but are many times larger in H. mirabilis, where each flower measures about 1 centimeter in diameter. The white flowers smell like freshly cut grass, making it a real charmer. The plant is also easy to care for.

Botanical Description

In nature, Hoya mirabilis grows on tree trunks and branches in both semi-open and shady areas of evergreen mountain forests at altitudes between 1050 and 1100 meters. A fascinating detail is that it often associates with ants; its roots typically develop in ant nests.

Unlike its relative H. lacunosa, which grows in lowland forests at 0 to 600 meters altitude, H. mirabilis prefers higher mountain forests. Both species have small leaves with slightly recurved edges and white wheel-shaped flowers.

Care
