Hoya macrophylla , formerly known as Hoya cinnamomifolia , is a large-growing hoya from Java with strikingly large leaves that can reach 20 centimeters in length and 6 centimeters in width. The original name cinnamomifolia refers to the leaves' resemblance to the cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum).

This species is one of the larger members of the Hoya genus and typically has one leaf per node. Each leaf is dark green with lighter colored veins running parallel along the leaf.

The flowers are produced in umbels of 20-30 flowers and have bright red/burgundy corollas. Each flower is about 2 centimeters in diameter!

Botanical description

Hoya macrophylla is native to Java where it grows epiphytically in tropical forests. The species is known to be more demanding in cultivation than many other hoya species, making it a challenge for experienced collectors.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Water when the soil is almost completely dry, although most hoya species prefer drier conditions between waterings. Use well-drained soil, preferably orchid bark mixed with perlite and potting soil, like our aroid soil.
