Giant plant similar to Agave, a unique addition to the conservatory!
Furcraea foetida, also known as Mauritius hemp, is a succulent plant from the Caribbean and northern South America that forms rosettes of leaves up to 1.8 meters long. The plant is closely related to the North American Agave and Yucca genera but forms its own genus, distinguished primarily by the shape of its flowers.
The leaves are sword-shaped, 10-15 centimeters wide at their broadest point, and somewhat more flexible than those of agaves. They are mostly stemless, but older specimens can develop a short, stem-like base up to 1 meter tall. The flowers are greenish to creamy white, 4 centimeters long, and strongly scented, produced on large inflorescences up to 7.5 meters tall!
Furcraea foetida is widely cultivated for its fiber quality, a strong, thinner, and softer fiber used for ropes, sacks, hammocks, and other products.
Botanical description
The plant dies after flowering and setting seed, but leaves behind young plants that emerge from the roots and rhizome around the base of the mother plant. The inflorescences produce small bulbils (what we sell here) in large quantities that spread naturally and can form dense stands.
The plant is widely cultivated and naturalized in many places including India, parts of Africa, Portugal, Australia, Thailand, Florida, New Zealand, and many oceanic islands.
The plant takes 3-4 years before its first harvest and can then be harvested every 2-3 years, with a total lifespan of 7-10 years.
Care
Furcraeas are not difficult to grow; they are slow-growing, dramatic, and even thrive with some neglect. If you like to fuss over houseplants a lot and water frequently, this plant is probably not for you. However, if you prefer to "set it and forget it" and have a sunny window, Furcraea might be perfect.
Requires well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Thrives best where annual daytime temperatures are within 23-30°C but tolerates 16-34°C. Hardiness down to about -4 to -2°C (although claims of survival below -7°C exist, these are questionable). The plant thrives in a variety of climates, from warm dry to humid tropical.
Does not need repotting every year; most species are slow-growing and take a long time to outgrow their pot. Handle the plant as little as possible as it dislikes disturbance. When repotting, refresh depleted soil with a new soil mix and ensure the plant is firmly anchored. Do not plant too deeply as this encourages stem rot. Buy Furcraea foetida online!
