Trout begonia is characterized by its spotted leaves
Begonia maculata is a beautiful species with blue-green leaves covered in round and white dots that sparkle in the right light. This begonia from southern Brazil has become hugely popular as a houseplant due to its appearance and relatively undemanding care compared to many other decorative begonias.
The leaves reach up to 30 centimetres in length with deep red undersides that contrast beautifully with the white dots on the upper surface. The plant produces numerous drooping white flowers and continues to form new stems from the base that can grow up to 2 metres tall with support.
Botanical Description
Begonia maculata, whose Latin name means "spotted", is native to southern Brazil (Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) where it grows in mountainous areas at altitudes of 200-700 meters. In its natural habitat, it occurs on relatively dry slopes in the rainforest understory.
The species belongs to the section Gaerdtia within the begonia genus and is a bamboo-like begonia with upright, articulated stems that become woody with age.
Care
Trout begonia thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. The best potting soil for begonias is generally a well-drained soil with perlite. Our peat-free potting soil is excellent for these tropical plants. Buy trout begonias online!
