Mexican leaf cactus with fishbone-shaped stems and night-blooming fragrant flowers

Disocactus anguliger (syn. Epiphyllum anguliger), known as 'fishbone cactus', is a tropical leaf cactus from southwestern and central Mexico (down to Hidalgo). The currently accepted name is Disocactus anguliger rather than the more familiar Epiphyllum anguliger.

In nature, this cactus grows epiphytically on and around trees in tropical forests with humid and warm climates. The leafless, flat stems grow to over one meter in length and about 5 to 8 centimeters wide with lobed edges that give the cactus its typical and unique fishbone-like appearance. The hanging green stems make it a fantastic hanging plant or a dramatic feature on a shelf or pedestal.

The fragrant white to light yellow flowers reach a diameter of 10 to 13 centimeters and are only open at night, primarily attracting bats as pollinators. During the blooming season, the exotic flowers fill the room with a delightful aroma.

Care

Thrives in a bright location, preferably with a few hours of mild morning or evening sun. Treat it more like a tropical plant than a cactus and do not let it dry out for too long. Keep the soil slightly moist during the growing season but drier in winter. Use well-drained soil or orchid substrate as it grows epiphytically in nature.
