Cyathea tomentosissima , a compact tree fern from the cloud forests of New Guinea
This species is distinguished from other tree ferns by its relatively compact size and beautiful reddish-brown hairs covering the stem.
In its natural habitat it can reach up to 2.5 metres in height with a trunk of around 30 centimetres in diameter and a crown of leaves around 2 metres long. As a houseplant it remains considerably smaller and can be grown in a pot throughout its life.
Botanical description
Cyathea tomentosissima comes from the cloud forests and highland grasslands of New Guinea. The name of the species was relatively recently changed from ' Sphaeropteris tomentosissima'
The species thrives in cool, moist and shady environments in its natural habitat, reflecting its origin from highland cloud forests where the climate is cool and humidity is constantly high.
Care
Cyathea tomentosissima thrives best in high humidity and moist soil. Use a soil mix with perlite, such as our peat-free soil mix.
Place the plant in shade or partial shade with protection from direct sun and wind. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
The plant is not very hardy and should be grown in a pot where it can be moved indoors over the winter. Buy Cyathea tomentosissima online!
