Cyathea tomentosissima, a compact tree fern from the cloud forests of New Guinea
This species differs from other tree ferns due to its relatively compact size and beautiful reddish-brown hairs covering the trunk.
In its natural habitat, it can reach up to 2.5 meters in height with a trunk approximately 30 centimeters in diameter and a crown of fronds about 2 meters long. As a potted plant, it remains significantly smaller and can be grown in a pot throughout its life.
Botanical Description
Cyathea tomentosissima comes from the cloud forests and highland meadows of New Guinea. The species' name was relatively recently changed from 'Sphaeropteris tomentosissima'
The species thrives in cool, humid, and shaded environments in its natural habitat, reflecting its origin from high-altitude cloud forests where the climate is cool and humidity is constantly high.
Care
Cyathea tomentosissima thrives best in high humidity and moist soil. Use a soil mixture with perlite, such as our peat-free soil mixture.
Place the plant in shade or partial shade, protected from direct sun and wind. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
The plant is not particularly hardy and should be grown in a pot where it can be moved indoors over winter. Buy Cyathea tomentosissima online!
