The cultivar 'Yellow Fusion' has a beautiful, striped, yellow variegation that can also turn slightly pink in plenty of light.

Calathea lietzei , which according to current taxonomy is actually called Goeppertia lietzei, comes from Brazil where it has a small distribution area along the coast. It grows there in the forest in shady places in the undergrowth from an underground rhizome that acts as a water and nutrient reservoir.

The plant grows to about 70 centimeters tall. The oblong, alternately light and dark striped leaves can grow to 30 centimeters long and 15 centimeters wide, in exceptional cases and under very good conditions even larger.

Botanical description

Calatheas are also called "prayer plants" in English because of the movement of their leaves, which they fold upwards at night as if in prayer. In general, the leaves move relatively quickly and a lot, so that these movements (which almost all plants actually do) are much more noticeable in them. This makes them seem truly alive.

This nyctinastic movement is an adaptation where the plant folds its leaves in the evening to reduce water loss and protect the leaf surface. In the morning, the leaves open again to maximize light absorption.

Care

Place in partial shade or a bright spot out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can fade the beautiful yellow variegation and damage the leaves. A spot near an east or north facing window is ideal.

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. The plant appreciates constant moisture but cannot tolerate standing water which can cause root rot.

Calathea lietzei thrives best in high humidity, preferably above 60%. Use a humidifier or place the plant on a humidity tray. Low humidity can cause the leaf edges to turn brown.

Fertilize moderately during the growing season with a halved dose of liquid plant nutrient.

Shipping Policy

When buying live plants, transport can sometimes affect the condition of the plant. We strive to ensure that all plants arrive in good health, but minor shipping damage, such as a torn leaf or bent stem, is sometimes unavoidable. Read more about our policy here.
