Calathea roseopicta: Pink on black velvet
There are few plants as dramatic as Calathea. roseopicta with its almost black-pink leaves. But what makes the plant really special is that the leaves move up and down during the day and fold like hands in prayer in the evening.
Botanical description
Calathea roseopicta (actually Goeppertia roseopicta) comes from the rainforests of northern South America where it grows in the shade. It is sometimes called 'Illustris'. It grows from underground rhizomes that act as a nutrient and water reservoir, helping it survive difficult periods.

The fascinating thing is that young leaves have the dramatic pink and black pattern, while older leaves transition to the regular roseopicta look. But since the plant is constantly sending up new shoots from the rhizome, you always have new spectacular leaves in the making.
Care
Bright, indirect light, direct sun fades the beautiful colors. High humidity (50-60%) to keep the leaves fresh. Wash the leaves with a damp cloth to prevent spider mites and mealybugs which are relatively common pests for Calatheas.
It thrives in well-drained soil that retains moisture, such as our aroid soil. Temperature 18-24°C, avoid drafts!
This plant is perfect for those who want drama and movement in their plant collection. Buy Calathea roseopicta online!
