Botanical description

Chamaedorea elegans is a solitary species in the palm family (Arecaceae) native to southern Mexico and northern Central America. The genus name comes from the Greek chamai- meaning "on the ground" and -dorea meaning "gift" - a reference to the palm's beauty and low growth habit. The Latin specific name elegans means "elegant".

Care

Chamaedorea elegans thrives best in bright, indirect light and does well in low to medium humidity. It can tolerate lower light, but does best near a north or east window.

Avoid overwatering, the soil should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. The plant can withstand short periods of drought, but grows best if the soil is kept slightly moist.
