Rare Bornean Begonia with Small, Constantly Color-Changing Leaves in Burgundy, Green, and Pink

Begonia sp. Julau is likely endemic to the Julau area in Sarawak, Borneo, where it thrives in the shady, constantly moist undergrowth of tropical forests. Like many Bornean begonias, it has evolved in an environment of high humidity and low light, which has shaped its distinct adaptations.

This begonia produces asymmetrical, often angel-wing-shaped or rounded leaves. Young leaves emerge in a deep, almost black burgundy or glossy dark green hue with striking pink spots or markings.

The leaves are relatively small, about 1 to 3 centimeters long, but densely packed on a compact plant that typically stays under approximately 38 centimeters in height.

There are noted variations of the variety (Type 1 and Type 2), with Type 1 being particularly sought after.

Care

Thrives in partial shade to shade with high humidity (70-80% or more), making it perfect for terrariums or plant cabinets. Avoid direct sun.

Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Use an airy, well-draining substrate. Ideal temperature 20-26 degrees Celsius. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season.

Avoid watering directly on the leaves, which can easily get spots or rot if they remain wet.
