Rex Cultivar with White-Green Leaves in a Spiral Pattern
Begonia 'Escargot' is a larger cultivar where the leaves grow to about 25 centimeters in size, and the spiral pattern becomes more pronounced the larger the leaves get. The plant is primarily grown for its decorative leaf pattern rather than its flowers.
Botanical Description
Begonia 'Escargot' belongs to the Begonia Rex Cultorum group, a collection of over 500 cultivars all descended from Begonia rex. This species is originally native to the eastern Himalayas, from southern Bhutan to northern Myanmar, and has been introduced to Bangladesh, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
When Begonia rex was introduced into cultivation, it became popular as a houseplant, and hybrids began to emerge with varying leaf patterns as Rex begonias hybridize quite freely. The species is known for its dark leaves with prominent silver-gray bands.
Care
Thrives in bright, indirect light without direct sun. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. Prefers high humidity (60-70%) but is more tolerant than many other begonias. Ideal temperature 18-24°C.
Use well-draining potting soil. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with diluted fertilizer. Remove withered or damaged leaves regularly. Propagate by leaf cuttings or division of the rhizome. Buy Begonia 'Escargot' online!
