An extraordinary and rare begonia with oval, fleshy leaves adorned with characteristic black spots.

Begonia blancii grows as a climber on moist surfaces, making it perfect for terrariums where it can display its natural behaviors. The fleshy leaves and compact size make it suitable for small spaces.

The flowers are a beautiful whitish pink and rise elegantly above the leaves on red flower stalks. Flowering occurs regularly under the right conditions and the charming flowers provide a beautiful contrast to the already impressive foliage.

Botanical description

Begonia blancii belongs to the family Begoniaceae and is endemic to the Philippine island of Palawan. The species was first described in 2011 by Hughes and Peng and is found naturally only on Palawan.

It belongs to the section Diploclinium within the begonia genus and is part of the rich flora that has developed in Palawan's unique limestone habitat. Palawan has a large endemic flora with many species found only on this island and nearby Borneo.

Care of B. blancii

B. blancii thrives best in an airy and well-drained substrate with a touch of perlite. The plant prefers constant light moisture but can tolerate short periods of dryness without problems.

Keep the temperature above 20°C during the day and preferably not below 18°C at night. A permanent humidity of at least 60% is necessary for optimal growth. Place the plant in bright to partial shade without direct sunlight. Fertilize sparingly with half-strength orchid fertilizer about every other week.

B. blancii grows with a creeping rhizome and is therefore best suited to a shallow but wide container. The plant can also be grown as a lithophyte directly on rocks in a terrarium. Buy Begonia blancii online!
