Konjac tuber, is an unusual plant that is grown for its edible tuber.

Wild konjac grows naturally in China and Southeast Asia. In Japan, it has been used since the 6th century, often as a health food. The plant has a large, decorative lobed leaf and a spectacular flower with a dark purple corolla.

The stem has a mottled pattern that acts as camouflage and protects the plant from herbivores. What looks like a stem is actually a stout leaf stalk, and since the plant only produces one leaf per season, damage can be devastating.

Botanical description

Amorphophallus konjac originates from southwestern China but is also cultivated in other parts of East and Southeast Asia.

Origin of Amorphophallus

Care instructions.

The tuberous calla grows a leaf every summer and then goes dormant during the winter. Then the tuber should be overwintered in a dry and frost-free place, e.g. in the basement. In the spring, the tuber can be placed in a pot and kept moist. Soon it will produce a shoot that will become the new foliage. Rarely, however, will the shoot be a beautiful inflorescence. This flower has a peculiar scent reminiscent of rotten meat, since the plant is pollinated by flies.

The tuber sometimes produces more than one shoot and then these can be divided into different pots to get more plants. The tuber calla should be placed in an airy and porous soil mixture with perlite and pieces of bark. The soil should be kept moist at all times. In the summer, the konjac plant should be placed in indirect light, e.g. behind a curtain by a sunny window. Take the opportunity to grow tuber calla at home, buy konjac calla online!
