Large & variegated ginger plant with yellow-striped leaves, popular in Mediterranean gardens

Alpinia zerumbet, often called "shell ginger" in English because the individual pink flowers, especially in the bud stage, resemble seashells. The flowers have a lovely cinnamon fragrance. The variegated form also features striking leaves with wide yellow and green stripes running the length of the leaf, making it a very common feature in gardens around the Mediterranean.

The species is native to open woodlands in tropical East Asia and reaches up to 3 meters in height in its natural environment. As a houseplant, it remains significantly smaller and rarely exceeds 1.5 meters.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light to light direct sun; plenty of light is needed for the variegation to remain distinct. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season; the plant is quite thirsty and does not like to dry out completely.

Appreciates high humidity. Use well-drained, nutrient-rich potting soil. Ideal temperature 18-28 degrees Celsius. Fertilize regularly during the growing season for vigorous growth.

The species can be grown outdoors year-round in Swedish zones 1 to 2, i.e., the southernmost part of Sweden, provided it is well-protected. In practice, it is best grown as an indoor houseplant that can be moved outside in the summer.
