South African succulent with strap-shaped leaves in a fan pattern

Kumara plicatilis, formerly known as Aloe plicatilis, is a striking, richly branched shrub or small tree. Large specimens can reach a height of 3 to 5 meters. The stems are branched with clusters of strap-shaped leaves arranged in two opposite rows. The clusters resemble an open fan, hence the English name "fan aloe".

The leaves are dull grey-green with almost smooth edges, except for a few small teeth in the upper part.

Botanical description

Kumara plicatilis is restricted to the Western Cape of South Africa where its limited natural range extends from the mountains of Franschhoek to Elandskloof. It grows on steep, rocky slopes in well-drained, acidic, sandy soil.

The species grows in an area with high winter rainfall and a climate of dry hot summers and cold wet winters. It is often seen growing in areas not prone to fire, but it can survive fast-moving fires thanks to its thick fleshy leaves that contain a lot of moisture and resist fire, as well as its thick corky bark that protects against the heat.

Care

In cultivation, it should grow in well-drained substrate with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Our peat-free soil is suitable. It can only tolerate light frost.

Place in a sunny location with good drainage. Water during the cooler season and keep drier during the summer, in accordance with its natural rhythm.
