Hardy compact hybrid between A. reginula and melo with grey-green variegated leaves and red undersides

Alocasia 'Maharani' is a thick-leaved and hardy hybrid between Alocasia reginula and Alocasia melo, created by aroid botanist Peter Boyce during his time at Malesiana Tropicals around 2009. The hybrid remains small, just like both its parents, and was named after the Hindi word for queen, Maharani (महारानी), as a tribute to one of its parents, Alocasia reginula (reginula = 'little queen' in Latin).

The leaves are leathery and grey-green. Juvenile leaves have green undersides, while mature plants develop deep red undersides, an inheritance from Alocasia reginula. The leaves also have a beautiful textured surface.

Alocasia 'Maharani' is an excellent example of heterosis (hybrid vigor), the phenomenon where a hybrid exhibits superior characteristics to both parents.

Botanical description

Alocasia 'Maharani' can be easily distinguished from its parent Alocasia melo by several characteristics: the hybrid has distinctly lighter veins while A. melo shows a uniform coloration; melo's leaves are much stiffer with a deeper texture; A. melo has darker and grayer leaves; and melo has light green undersides while 'Maharani' retains the red underside from A. reginula.

Care
