Tålig kompakt hybrid mellan A. reginula och melo med grågröna variegerade blad och röda undersidor
Alocasia 'Maharani' är en tjockbladig och tålig hybrid mellan Alocasia reginula och Alocasia melo, skapad av aroid-botanikern Peter Boyce under hans tid på Malesiana Tropicals omkring 2009. Hybriden förblir liten precis som båda sina föräldrar och namngavs efter hindi ordet för drottning, Maharani (महारानी), som en hyllning till en av föräldrarna, Alocasia reginula ( reginula = 'liten drottning' på latin).
Bladen är läderartade och grågröna. Juvenila blad har gröna undersidor, medan mogna plantor utvecklar djupt röda undersidor, ett arv från Alocasia reginula. Bladen har dessutom en vacker texturerad yta.
Alocasia 'Maharani' är ett utmärkt exempel på heterosis (korsningsvitalitet), fenomenet där en korsning uppvisar egenskaper överlägsna båda föräldrarna.
Botanisk beskrivning
Alocasia 'Maharani' kan lätt särskiljas från sin förälder Alocasia melo genom flera kännetecken: hybriden har distinkt ljusare nerver medan A. melo visar en enhetlig färgsättning; melos blad är mycket styvare med djupare textur; A. melo har mörkare och gråare blad; och melo har ljusgröna undersidor medan 'Maharani' behåller den röda undersidan från A. reginula.
Skötsel
Trivs i ljust, indirekt ljus. Gärna med extra växtbelysning. Vattna när jorden torkat något. Kräver hög luftfuktighet (60-70%) och väldränerad, luftig jord. Idealtemperatur 20-26 grader Celsius.
